Towards the Mineral of Chrome – 2024

Driant Zeneli’s mural Towards the Mineral of Chrome (2024) includes a colourful drawing with text that narrate a spaceship’s journey towards Epsilon Eridani. Located 10.5 light-years from the sun, the star is the third-closest one visible to the naked eye. Zeneli took inspiration for the work from Albanian writer Arion Hysenbegas’ science-fiction novel On the Way to Epsilon Eridani (1983). At Sharjah Biennial 16, this mural is on view alongside Zeneli’s film Maybe the cosmos is not so extraordinary (2019), also loosely based on the same book. Each of Zeneli’s drawings in the mural is dated 2018–2427 where 2018 indicates the year Zeneli began the project, while 2427 corresponds to the year that the astronauts in Hysenbegas’ novel begin their expedition. Rather than illustrating the novel’s events, the drawings sketch a parallel narrative that imagines the possibilities of humanity’s relationship with the cosmos.
